Colledge Talk | Parental Units and Their Place in the Admissions Process

Colledge College Admissions Consulting Parentals Blog (1)

“How involved should I be in my student’s college application process?”

It’s probably one of the most frequently asked questions we get at Colledge.  From the college admissions scandal to “Tiger Moms” to “helicopter parents,” the national conversation around getting into college is filled with loaded language and critical messaging.

But the question of how involved parents should be in college admissions is a real one, and it’s a question we get all the time at Colledge.  We’ll be diving into the deep waters of that question with our President & Founder, Jenny Umhofer in our next Colledge Talk on Sunday, June 5, at 6 p.m.

We’ll talk through the process of applying for college and explain how it starts well before senior year.  We’ll trace the emotional arc of students and parents, and discuss how that affects relationships and the work to be done.  We’ll talk through the timeline of the admissions process and how parents can support students during critical moments.  And we’ll outline some of the key values—including ownership, self-awareness, self-reliance, self-advocacy—that guide our efforts with students.

During this talk we’ll help identify some of the key elements of a student’s progress for parents to be aware of. And we’ll discuss what parents can do, through conversations during car rides, discussions over dinner, even texts, to nudge things in the right the direction.
